An Aquascan, also known as a 3D Hydroscan or a Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS), is an internal ultrasound scan, where a saline solution is used to show a detailed outline of the uterine cavity (womb). A routine ultrasound scan is helpful in spotting larger growths, but this technique greatly improves the detection of polyps, fibroids, scar tissue or any other uterine anomalies.

When should the scan be used?

An Aquascan should be used to investigate uterine abnormalities in women who experience infertility or multiple miscarriages. It is also a valuable technique for evaluating unexplained vaginal bleeding.

What does an Aquascan involve?

A speculum is inserted in the vagina to visualise the neck of the womb (similar to a smear test). Then the neck of the womb (cervix) is cleaned and a small soft catheter is passed gently through the cervix and into the cavity of the womb. Once this is in place, warm saline (salt water) is passed through the catheter whilst the scan takes place.

When is the best time to have an Aquascan?

The best time to perform an Aquascan is one week after menstruation. At this time in the menstrual cycle, the lining of your uterus is at its thinnest, which is the best time to determine if the endometrium is normal. However, the timing of your scan may vary, depending on your symptoms and their suspected origins.

What are the benefits of an Aquascan?

  • An Aquascan is a non-invasive technique that can be quickly and easily performed in around 30 minutes.
  • The results of your scan are usually available immediately.
  • This method of checking the uterine cavity is very safe and it requires no surgery or anaesthetic. It also means you are not exposed to X-rays or radiation.
  • As well as being able to diagnose polyps and fibroids in the uterus, an Aquascan can also detect any abnormalities in the shape of your uterus or any scar tissue.
