What Fertility Treatments Are Available to Men?

March 16 2020 11:23am

In many infertility cases, there happen to be more than one cause, so it’s wise for both parties to see a doctor and take a variety of tests. Unfortunately, in some cases, no cause is identified. In order to diagnose male infertility problems, discussions will take place in the consultation as to whether there are any pre-existing health problems or injuries, and perhaps also about the patient’s lifestyle or sexual habits.

What is the Main Fertility Test for Men?

The main fertility test for men is a semen analysis. The embryologist will check the count and will also look for abnormalities in the shape and movement of the sperm. To get an accurate measure, sometimes more than one analysis will be carried out; however it is wise to wait a few months between tests. The need for blood tests for hormonal issues may also be indicated by the semen analysis.

How Can Infertility in Men Be Treated?

Medication

Sometimes male infertility is the result of an infection, which can be treated with antibiotics. Problems such as erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation may also be treated using medication or by referral to a specialist. If the patient has too high or too low levels of a particular hormone, their doctor my prescribe hormone replacements to help. While these causes of infertility can be treated easily, it’s very important to note that the treatment doesn’t always guarantee restored fertility.

Surgery

In some cases, the patient might need surgery. Prior vasectomies can be reversed and sperm retrieval techniques can be used to take sperm directly from the testicles in cases where the sperm is produced but not ejaculated. Then assisted reproductive technology is used to help a couple become pregnant with their own sperm and egg cells.

What Can I Do to Improve My Fertility?

There are a few things you can do in your home to help increase your chances of becoming pregnant. Firstly, you should make sure that you make healthy lifestyle choices, such as a nutritious diet, regular exercise and limited smoking and drinking. Your testes need to be a little cooler than the rest of your body, so loose underwear is usually a good idea and, for the same reason, excessively hot baths or saunas are not a good idea. You may also need to increase or decrease the amount of intercourse you’re having and avoid lubricants, as they can impair sperm movement.
