Sperm Tail Discovery Could Improve Fertility Treatments

April 3, 2018 10:09 am

Despite all of the research into fertility and reproduction, surprisingly little is known about the individual cell structures involved. The latest research into this area could lead to improvements in fertility treatments and their success rates. The latest discovery relates to sperm cells and their structure. A new imaging technique called cryogenic electric tomography (cryo-ET for short) allows researchers to see cells in 3D – this gives them unprecedented insight into how cells move and interact with each other. This additional dimension allowed researchers to see a new helix structure at the tip of the sperm cell’s tail, which had never been seen before. The study has been published in Scientific Reports, and could provide insights into why some sperm... View Article

Paternal Stress Alters Sperm and Children’s Behaviour

March 26, 2018 10:09 am

The effect of stress on fertility and overall health has been well documented, but new studies have begun to unveil the extent of its impact. Stressed fathers may end up with changes to their sperm, which in turn affects the behaviour of offspring who were conceived during that stressful period. Studies on mice have shown that sperm produced by stressed males is richer in microRNAs – this type of molecule has an impact on everything from heart and kidney disease through to obesity and propensity towards alcoholism. Scientists working on this study are particularly concerned about the impact on healthy stress responses in children – an inability to respond properly to stress can lead to disorders such as PTSD and... Dealing with Infertility Over Christmas

December 21, 2017 9:53 am

While Christmas and the surrounding holidays are a wonderful time to relax and see family and friends, it can be particularly difficult or stressful for people experiencing infertility or going through fertility treatments. You may need to make some adjustments to your standard Christmas activities to enjoy yourself or even to improve the efficacy of your fertility treatment. Be Careful About Food and Drink Christmas is definitely a time of over-indulgence, but this may not be an option if you are undergoing IVF or any other fertility treatment. You should still be able to enjoy the standard Christmas favourites, such as Christmas dinner and plenty of chocolate, but the advice to avoid alcohol still stands around the holidays. You may... The Most Common Fertility Myths

November 27, 2017 10:17 am

Like any health issue, fertility is surrounded with myths and outdated information which can confuse people who are trying to conceive or even reduce their chances of success. Our doctors often hear people repeat these myths – unfortunately, it is difficult to find reliable sources of information, especially with the vast number of contradictory articles online. These are some of the most common myths we have heard at Concept Fertility. Previous IVF Pregnancy Increases Chances of Success

October 17, 2017 9:59 am

Fertility treatments can be stressful, and for women with an existing history of miscarriage it can be disheartening and painful to experience more. However, there is hope for couples who have previously miscarried following IVF treatment – women who have previously conceived due to IVF actually have a better chance of getting pregnant again. A University of Aberdeen study looked at more than 112,000 women between 1999 and 2008 – researchers found that women who successfully conceived during a course of IVF were at least 10% more likely to conceive again (compared to women who did not conceive). Women who miscarried in the first cycle of IVF had a 40.9% chance of having a baby over 2 further IVF cycles,... View Article

Implanting Two Embryos Could Reduce Chances of Pregnancy

September 25, 2017 9:34 am

Implanting two embryos during IVF has been the default technique for certain groups in order to maximise the chances of pregnancy, especially in the past when techniques were less refined, or with clinics or countries which are not so concerned with the problems associated with multiple pregnancies. A recent research programme shows that if one of the embryos is of lower quality than the other it can actually reduce the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy by up to 27%. Experts have previously believed that the body may focus on the better embryo, but these researchers have now suggested that the body may reject pregnancy altogether based on the quality of the poorer embryo rather than selecting the best candidate.... 80% of Women Give Birth within 5 Years of Fertility Treatments

September 12, 2017 9:34 am

The majority of women under 35 will give birth within 5 years of starting fertility treatments, a Danish study has shown. While treatments such as IVF and IUI do not necessarily work first time, this study has revealed that over half have a baby within 2 years of starting treatment, with that figure rising dramatically when you look at birth rates over 5 years. Maternal age did have an impact on the results – while 80% of women under 35 gave birth within 5 years, that figure dropped to 60% for women between 35 and 40, and 26% for women over 40. Overall, of the almost 20,000 followed as part of the study, 57% had a child as a result... View Article

3 Things to Do Before Going to a Fertility Clinic

July 10, 2017 10:20 am

Whilst we will never prevent you seeing one of our doctors, we try to make you aware if you have not tried to conceive naturally for long enough (for example), and therefore may be better...
