Can a High BMI Prevent Fertility Treatment

Can BMI Prevent Fertility Treatment?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. A high or low BMI can impact fertility by affecting hormone balance, ovulation, and overall reproductive health. For some patients, it may also influence the types of fertility treatment available, as increased BMI can affect the safety and effectiveness of surgical and anaesthetic procedures during treatment.

At Concept Fertility Clinic, we believe fertility treatment should be accessible and tailored to the individual. We are one of the few fertility clinics in the UK to offer treatment with a higher BMI limit, because we do not believe patients should be automatically refused or penalised solely due to an increased BMI.

Rather than focusing only on BMI figures, our team assesses your overall health, medical history, lifestyle, and fertility needs before recommending treatment. BMI is just one factor among many, and it does not always accurately reflect a person’s health or fertility potential. For example, individuals with higher muscle mass may have a raised BMI without increased medical risk. Where appropriate, patients may also be reviewed by a Consultant Anaesthetist to ensure treatment can be carried out safely and effectively.

PCOS/PMOS, Weight Gain and Fertility

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is one of the most common causes of female infertility and is often linked with weight gain and difficulty losing weight. Women with PCOS/PMOS typically have enlarged ovaries containing multiple small follicles that do not fully mature or release eggs regularly. As a result, ovulation may occur infrequently, reducing the chances of natural conception.

PCOS/PMOS affects up to 1 in 10 women aged between 15 and 50 and is particularly common in women experiencing ovulation problems. Studies suggest that around 50–60% of women with PCOS/PMOS are clinically overweight or obese, and standard weight-loss programmes may not always be effective due to underlying hormonal and metabolic factors.

Managing weight alongside PCOS/PMOS symptoms can significantly improve fertility outcomes, regulate menstrual cycles, and increase the chances of successful fertility treatment.

How Lifestyle and BMI Affect Fertility

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), obesity and excess weight are primarily caused by an imbalance between calories consumed and calories burned. Modern lifestyles often contribute to weight gain through:

  • Increased consumption of high-fat, energy-dense foods
  • Sedentary working environments
  • Reduced physical activity
  • Increased reliance on transport
  • Urban lifestyles with lower daily movement

A high BMI can affect both male and female fertility, influencing hormone production, egg quality, sperm quality, and pregnancy outcomes. Achieving a healthier lifestyle may help improve natural fertility and support better treatment outcomes.
