HyCoSy (Fallopian Tube Patency Test)

Understanding the health of your fallopian tubes is an important part of a fertility assessment. The HyCoSy (Fallopian Tube Patency Test) is a short, safe scan that checks whether the tubes are open and functioning properly, providing valuable insight to help guide your fertility journey.

What is a HyCoSy Scan?

A HyCoSy fertility scan is a short, minimally invasive procedure used to check whether the fallopian tubes are damaged or blocked. Also known as a Tubal Patency Test or Dye Test, it can be an alternative to an HSG (Hysterosalpingography) or laparoscopy with dye, without the need for X-rays.

During the procedure, a fine catheter is gently passed through the cervix into the uterus, allowing an ultrasound contrast medium to flow through the fallopian tubes. This movement is monitored in real time using ultrasound, enabling clinicians to identify any blockages or abnormalities. Find out more about what the procedure involves below.

HyCoSy Costs and Packages

Standard HyCoSy (Fallopian Tube Patency Test) Scan – £495

This standard test is designed for women who have concerns about the health of their fallopian tubes. During the procedure, a contrast dye is gently passed through the tubes under ultrasound guidance, allowing each fallopian tube to be assessed for blockages, adhesions, or other abnormalities. This technique is known as Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy). Patients are advised to empty their bladder before the procedure.

HyCoSy (Fallopian Tube Patency Test) with Full Consultation – £690

This service includes the same HyCoSy procedure and investigations as the initial test, with the added benefit of a comprehensive post-test consultation with your doctor. During this appointment, your results will be explained in detail, along with the wider implications for your fertility and any potential treatment options. As above, patients are advised to empty their bladder before the HyCoSy.

This treatment option includes:

  • Ultrasound scan of the uterus and pelvis, including an Antral Follicle Count
  • Fallopian tube patency test (HyCoSy)
  • Review of your medical history
  • Full consultation and personalised plan.

The HyCoSy Procedure Details

3D Ultrasound Technology

At Concept Fertility, we use advanced 3D ultrasound technology as part of your HyCoSy scan, giving a significantly clearer and more detailed view of the reproductive anatomy than conventional 2D ultrasonography. This enhanced three-dimensional imaging helps clinicians assess the uterus and fallopian tubes with greater precision, improving the accuracy of diagnosis and providing better insight into any abnormalities or blockages. 3D ultrasound supports more confident clinical decision-making throughout your fertility assessment.

The HyCoSy Procedure Simplified

The HyCoSy test involves introducing a contrast medium through the cervical canal into the uterus, where it flows through the fallopian tubes and into the peritoneal cavity. The movement of this fluid is monitored in real time using an internal (transvaginal) ultrasound scan, allowing your doctor to assess whether the fallopian tubes are open or if any blockages are present that could affect natural conception.

The test is usually performed in the first half of your menstrual cycle, between days five and twelve, after your period has ended. This timing helps ensure the most accurate results.

HyCoSy procedures at Concept Fertility Clinic are carried out by our highly skilled clinical team, using our own facilities. We also provide HyCoSy testing for patients referred by GPs, gynaecologists, or other fertility clinics, as well as for patients who self-refer following a discussion with our specialists. This may include women experiencing unexplained infertility or those with concerns about potential scarring of the fallopian tubes due to previous infections, such as chlamydia.

During the procedure, a fine catheter is gently passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus (womb). A small balloon is inflated to hold the catheter in place in the uterine cavity, before the contrast medium is introduced. Some women experience mild discomfort, similar to the cramps experienced during menstruation, but the procedure is closely monitored throughout by your doctor via ultrasound, ensuring both accuracy and patient safety.

How Long Does The HyCoSy Test Take?

Our HyCoSy (fallopian tube patency test) procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and no anaesthetic is required.

Patient Preparation Guide

When to Perform a HyCoSy (fallopian tube patency test) Test

If you are considering a HyCoSy test, we recommend contacting us on the first or second day of your period to arrange your appointment. The test is best performed in the first half of your menstrual cycle, typically between days five and twelve, once your period has ended.

HyCoSy Treatment and Sexual Intercourse Restrictions

It is recommended that you avoid sexual intercourse from the first day of your menstrual period until after your HyCoSy (fallopian tube patency test) has been completed. Following the procedure, you can resume your normal daily activities, including protected or unprotected sexual intercourse, if you wish.

Infection Screening (Chlamydia)

Before your HyCoSy (fallopian tube patency test), your consultant may recommend a high vaginal swab and chlamydia screening to rule out any infection prior to the procedure. In some cases, a preventative course of antibiotics may be prescribed instead, to ensure the test can be carried out safely.

Pain Management & Antibiotics

We recommend taking two paracetamol tablets, or another suitable over-the-counter painkiller, one to two hours before your procedure to help minimise any discomfort. If you have any concerns about the procedure or the use of pain relief, including due to an existing medical condition, please contact our experienced team, who will be happy to provide further information and advice.

HyCoSy Results and Follow-Up Treatment Options

Once your HyCoSy procedure has been completed, your doctor will discuss the results with you, and a written report will be sent to you by post. The scan shows how the contrast medium flows through the fallopian tubes, helping to confirm whether they are open or if there are any areas of restriction.

If any abnormalities are identified, further investigations such as laparoscopy and/or hysteroscopy may be recommended. In this case, a follow-up appointment will be arranged with your consultant to discuss the findings and next steps in more detail.

Following the procedure, you will be prescribed a five-day course of antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. These will be provided to you on the day of your HyCoSy.
