Do’s and Don’ts After Embryo Transfer

An embryo transfer refers to the transfer of embryos created in previous rounds of IVF that remain unused. This makes for a simpler process as hormones are not needed and the eggs have already been collected. To improve your chances of conceiving, there are a number of things that you can do following an embryo transfer. Here are some of the do’s and don’ts.

Eat as You Would Do Pregnant
Until you take a test, you will not know whether the procedure has been a success. To have the best chance possible, it is important that you eat as if you were pregnant. You should drink plenty of water, avoid processed foods, increase your intake of oily fish, and keep on top of your vitamins.

During early pregnancy, folic acid is an important one to take. It will help form the neural tube and minimise the risk of some major birth defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly.

Wait Before Taking a Pregnancy Test
You might be tempted to find out whether or not the procedure has been a success but it’s important to wait for two weeks before taking a pregnancy test as you can get a false positive.

Sexual Intercourse
While it’s perfectly fine to have sexual intercourse while pregnant, following an embryo transfer it is advised against. It can cause uterine contractions and interfere with the implantation of an embryo.

Rest
An embryo transfer can leave you feeling tired which is why you will be advised to rest by your doctor. For a few weeks following, you may still feel fatigue which is why you should take things easy, get enough sleep and avoid doing anything too strenuous so that you don’t over-exert yourself.

Medications
After reviewing your current medication and dosage, your doctor will have provide you with instructions on how to take them going forward. It is important that this is adhered to and any other medications aside from your usual are taken as if you are pregnant.
