Looking After Yourself Through Infertility

Couple Holding Hands

Infertility is arguably one of the hardest problems a couple can face. It is accompanied with a variety of difficult emotions and can put an enormous strain on even the strongest of relationships. It’s incredibly important for anyone experiencing infertility to take care of their physical and mental health, particularly if undergoing fertility treatments.

Build a Support Network

Don’t be afraid to share your story with others and accept their support if it’s offered. What’s more, you need to remember that you and your partner are in this together and you should talk about how you feel. Face it with a united front!

Try to be Positive

Of course, it’s perfectly okay to be sad; you do not need to feel ashamed for crying and you should allow yourself to do so every once in a while. With that said, you should try and focus on staying positive and making constructive changes to your lifestyle to improve your overall health. Eat meals rich in vitamins and minerals, cut down on alcohol and be sure to relax and de-stress. Different techniques work for different people, but you could try mediation or therapy, or something simpler like a bubble bath; whatever works best for you.

It’s also worth finding some other things that make you happy to take your mind off trying to get pregnant. You need to learn to enjoy the present rather than thinking “I will only be happy when I have a baby”. This will improve your general mental health, which in turn could increase your chances of a successful pregnancy. Feeling chronically stressed, on the other hand, will have an adverse effect.

Educate Yourself

It’s important that you understand everything you’re going through. Speak to professionals about your treatment options and what to expect from them, what the costs will be and how you can prepare. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. Keeping yourself in the know will make the experience feel a lot less scary.
